Pregnancy glucose-monitoring targets
Usual ADA 2026 references. Your clinician may set different goals. These are NOT GDM diagnostic-test cutoffs.
Fasting<95 mg/dL
1 hour after a meal<140 mg/dL
2 hours after a meal<120 mg/dL
Count the 1- or 2-hour reading from the START of the meal unless your care team advises otherwise.
Nutrition management for GDM
If diagnosed with GDM, follow your diabetes/maternity team’s individualized meal plan. Choose balanced meals, not fasting or severe carbohydrate restriction.
- Balance dal/chana/rajma or other protein with an appropriate portion of roti/rice, plenty of vegetables, and curd if suitable. Your portion size should follow your individual diet plan.
- Eat regular meals and planned snacks as needed. Do not skip meals or start weight-loss or very low-carbohydrate diets during pregnancy to reduce glucose.
- Choose water over sweetened drinks/juice. Include whole fruits, fibre-rich grains, vegetables, pulses, and adequate protein.
- If your maternity team says exercise is safe, a comfortable 10–15-minute walk after meals may help.
- Share your record with your antenatal/diabetes team. Persistent readings above the target may require a treatment review; do not start, stop or adjust medications yourself.
Vegetarian options: dal, cooked pulses, chana, rajma, paneer, curd and soy foods if suitable.
Mixed diet options: dal/chana plus thoroughly cooked egg, poultry or safely cooked fish; follow pregnancy food-safety advice.
