For South Asian adults, 23 is the overweight/increased-risk threshold and 27.5 is the obesity threshold. This interpretation is separate from standard international categories.
Healthy lifestyle guidance Include vegetables, pulses, fruit, whole grains, and adequate protein in regular balanced meals. Choose enjoyable, sustainable physical activity within your medical and physical limits. Discuss blood pressure, blood glucose, waist size, sleep, medication and health history with a clinician. Avoid crash diets or unsupervised supplements; ask for help if weight changes unexpectedly.
Important in pregnancy Pregnancy weight-gain advice is based on pre-pregnancy BMI and individual clinical circumstances. Do not use a current-pregnancy BMI to prescribe weight loss.
